What about pleas? How lenient are prosecutors in this day and age with regard to reducing charges?

We’ve had a lot of success in our office with reductions to non-alcohol offenses, which is really what everybody wants, a reckless driving or a careless driving.  They are still very difficult to obtain that type of reduction.  Part of the reason is because these cases are really overseen and scrutinized by a variety of different bodies including Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

I have heard prosecutors tell me that if they offer a non-alcohol reduction a representative of Mothers Against Drunk Driving will call them and really harass them and ask them why they reduced the case.  I was also talking with another prosecutor in one of our local townships and he told me that when he reduces to non-alcohol, he has to go before the city board and explain to them why he’s done it, that’s the only crime where he has to do that.  Drunk driving is really in a category in its own in that regard.
